What is Ghana Premier League History?
The Ghana Premier League is the highest division of the football leagues in Ghana. It was established in 1956 by the Ghana Football Association to organise the football teams in Ghana into one league.
The league has 18 teams competing for the Ghana Premier League title. The teams compete by playing home and away games against each other in a round-robin system. After every game week, the teams are awarded points according to their performance – 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and no point for losing. At the end of the 34 weeks, the team with the most point win the League title.
The league title winner represents Ghana in the CAF Champions League, while the three bottom teams are relegated to the Ghana Division One League. The top teams from the 3 Division 1 leagues are also promoted to the Ghana Premier League.
Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak Accra are the two most competitive teams in the league, winning a combined 45 Ghana Premier League titles. Asante Kotoko is also one of the top ten African teams and has won the CAF Champions League title 2 times.
