What is Eredivisie History?

The Eredivisie was founded in 1956, and it is the highest level of professional football in the Netherlands today. It was formed barely two years after the Netherlands had adopted football as a professional sport. Through the period between 1898 and 1954, the Dutch national football championship developed into a mainstream event.

Clubs that had previously won the regional league participated in the playoffs to determine the winner of the title. At this period, the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) had stated that no player should be paid a salary, nor were clubs allowed to receive transfer fees for players.

National team members decide to travel abroad where they could accrue some benefits. Consequently, professional Dutch football began to grow in this way.

While playing abroad, Dutch players would come together to organise contests against the French national team in Paris. They won some matches, necessitating the creation of a professional body known as the NBVB in 1954.

The KNVB collaborated with the NBVB to create a regional league. In 1956, the two bodies abandoned the regional league and formed the Eredivisie with 18 clubs competing directly for a league title without play-offs.

Which Teams Are in the Eredivisie?

The Eredivisie comprises 18 teams. At the end of every season, the last two teams are relegated to the Eerste Divisie, a second tier of the league system in the Netherlands. The winner and runner-up of the Eerste Divisie will be promoted to occupy the two positions of the relegated teams.

Who Are the Favourites Teams for the Next Eredivisie?

Ajax is the most dominant team with the highest number of Eredivisie titles. Remember that this team was the first to win the Eredivisie after its launch in 1956. Surprisingly, the players have lived to the status of the team to sustain its dominance in the competition. Between 2011 and 2014, Ajax won the tournament four times in a row.

For the last three seasons, this team has also won the tournament in a row. It is highly likely that they will maintain the tempo, and anybody interested in the Eredivisie predictions should watch Ajax carefully. There is a little concern, though, that the club lost its long-time manager, but the officials will definitely find a credible replacement.
