What Is The African Nations Championship?

Also called the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship or CHAN, this is a biennial African association football tournament. Not to be confused with the Africa Cup of Nations, the African Nations Championship only features players who are playing in their respective national leagues.

The first tournament, held in 2009, was won by the Democratic Republic of Congo. Morocco and DRC are the only nations to have won CHAN twice, with Tunisia and Libya both winning the title once.

A total of 42 teams participated in the African Nations Championship qualifiers, which took place between July and September 2022. 18 teams qualified for the main event, including 2020 winners Morocco, along with Cameroon, Ghana, Mali, and Tunisia.

African Nations Championship Predictions

Stats Of The Last African Nations Championship?

When researching African Nations Championship predictions for this year, it’s always useful to look back at the previous tournament, which was held in Cameroon in January and February 2021.

For example, in the group stage, only 7 out of 24 games had over 2.5 goals. There were also 10 draws from those 24 matches. Both of these would have been stellar predictions of the African Nations Championship.

In the knockout stage, two quarter-finals had over 2.5 goals, while one match went to penalties. From the semi-finals onwards, including the third-place match, not one game ended with both teams scoring. Although there is no guarantee that this will happen again, clearly, some patterns materialised.

Which Teams Are in The African Nations Championship?

18 teams, including hosts Algeria, qualified for CHAN 2022. They have been drawn into five groups – 3 groups have four teams, while two groups have three teams each.

From groups A, B, and C, the top two teams go through to the knockout stage, whereas it is only the group winners of D and E that qualify.

Which Team Won The Last African Nations Championship?

In CHAN 2020, Morocco defended the title they won in won in 2018. They managed to keep four clean sheets in their seven matches while scoring an impressive 15 goals.

Given how the Atlas Lions have taken the FIFA World Cup by storm in Qatar, the odds are on them to repeat their success for a third-straight Championship. Certainly, when making a prediction on the African Nations Championship, this is one team to keep a close eye on.

Which Country Has Won The Most African Nations Championships?

The Democratic Republic of Congo and Morocco hold the title for the most African Nations Championships with two each. DRC won it in 2009 and 2016, and Morocco won in 2018 and 2020.

Who Are The Favourite Teams For The CHAN 2023?

The bookmakers are strongly leaning toward Morocco, and who can blame them. This team is in great form, and they will be hard to beat. However, Algeria will want to impress as the hosts, while Cameroon and Mali always give a good account of themselves.

Finally, don’t write off DR Congo. They like this competition and usually reach the latter stages when anything can happen.
