Everton are intensifying their pursuit of Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, with the Nigerian star emerging as a top transfer target for the Merseyside club following Leicester City’s relegation from the Premier League. After several transfer windows of speculation, the Toffees now appear to be in pole position to secure Ndidi’s signature. They want to capitalise on a unique opportunity created by Leicester’s drop to the Championship.

Ndidi signed a new contract last summer, extending his stay until 2027. However, the Foxes’ relegation has reportedly triggered a £9 million release clause in his contract. Making him available for a fee considered a bargain by Premier League standards. Everton, managed by David Moyes and now backed by The Friedkin Group, see Ndidi as the ideal candidate to fill the void left by Abdoulaye Doucoure’s departure. It should add much-needed energy and dynamism to their midfield.

In the 2024-25 season, Ndidi made 30 appearances for Leicester, contributing a goal and five assists. But his efforts were not enough to prevent the club’s relegation. Despite interest from other Premier League sides, including Manchester United, and potential suitors from Saudi Arabia, Everton’s renewed focus and the club’s Nigerian heritage could be decisive factors in luring Ndidi to Goodison Park.

The Toffees have a rich history of Nigerian talent gracing their ranks. It is a tradition that Ndidi would be proud to continue. Everton fans fondly remember the impact of Joseph Yobo, who became the club’s record overseas appearance holder. Not only that, he was the first African to captain the side. Daniel Amokachi remains a cult hero for his iconic brace in the 1995 FA Cup semi-final. While Yakubu Aiyegbeni’s goal-scoring exploits, Victor Anichebe’s strength, and Alex Iwobi’s versatility have all left lasting impressions at Goodison Park. More recently, Ademola Lookman and Hope Akpan have also donned the Everton blue.
