Yakubu started with Julius Berger in Nigeria before impressing at Maccabi Haifa in Israel, where his Champions League displays earned a move to Portsmouth. He scored 16 goals in his first Premier League season, helping the club stay up and quickly becoming a fan favourite.

A club-record move to Middlesbrough followed, where he continued to score freely, cementing his reputation as one of the most feared strikers in the English top flight.

Everton and beyond

Yakubu joined Everton in 2007 and enjoyed a superb first season, scoring 21 goals in all competitions โ€” the first Everton player in years to reach 20. Alongside compatriot Joseph Yobo at Goodison, he was a key figure until injuries interrupted his time there. He later scored freely for Blackburn Rovers, including four in one game.
