The Moroccan national team is likely facing a significant change in leadership as current head coach Walid Regragui is reportedly planning to step down after four successful years at the helm, according to recent media reports.
The 50-year-old coach, who made history by guiding Morocco to become the first African team to reach the World Cup semifinals, is reportedly feeling burnt out from the demanding role and desires a break from football.
Consequently, the Moroccan Football Federation has initiated the search for a successor capable of building on the strong achievements of the Atlas Lions.
As reported by the Spanish publication “MARCA,” one of the names on the federation’s shortlist is Xavi Hernandez. The 46-year-old is believed to be highly regarded by the Moroccan Football Federation and is expected to receive a formal offer in the near future.
If he accepts the role, Xavi would lead the Atlas Lions during this year’s upcoming World Cup. However, there’s considerable speculation about whether the former Barcelona manager would take such a significant position with only a limited time left for preparation before the tournament begins.
It’s worth noting that Xavi Hernandez managed Barcelona from 2021 to 2024, achieving notable successes, including winning the La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup during the 2022/2023 season.
However, the following season proved less fruitful for the Catalan club, leading to his departure. Prior to that, Xavi also enjoyed considerable success during his coaching spell with Qatari club Al-Sadd SC.
