UEFA Nations League 2024/25: Germany Vs Hungary Preview

Last Updated on

Germany will meet Hungary in Matchday 6 of the UEFA Nations League 2024/25, set to be played on the 19th of November at the Puskás Aréna Park in Budapest. This Group C fixture will be the final group stage match played by either team. The top two teams of the group will advance to the quarter-final round, played home-and-away over two legs in March 2025.

The Germans head into the matchup topping Group C with 13 points from 4 wins and 1 draw. Hungary are currently in third, securing just one win to go with two draws and two losses for 5 points thus far through the group stage.

Even though Hungary are just three points behind the Netherlands, they have no chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals. This is due to the 4-0 defeat they took last Saturday at the hands of the Netherlands which gave the Dutch team the tie-breaker between the two sides. Even if both teams end on 8 points after Matchday 6, Netherlands will advance.

With the game having no bearing on either team’s position in the group, we expect both coaches to make some heavy rotations. The Germans have already confirmed that they will start Alexander Nübel in goal instead of Oliver Baumann. They may also choose to play Nico Schlotterbeck at the centre-back position in place of the suspended Jonathan Tah.

Hungary will be at full strength again, as veteran defender Atila Fiola comes back from suspension. It’s likely the Hungarian coach will give some of his younger players a shot at one of the best teams in the world for experience purposes.

Germany

Germany have dominated Group C to easily qualify for the quarter-final round of the UEFA Nations League. They started off strong in the group stage opener against Hungary, beating their opponents 5-0 in September. Germany had a clear advantage in possession and shots on goal, restricting Hungary to just 6 shots compared to their 23.

Matchday 2 saw the Germans face their only draw in the groups, as Netherlands were able to equalize in the second half for a 2-2 tie. Germany then went on to beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-1 and avenged their draw against Netherlands with a 1-0 win. In their latest match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Germans were ruthless, destroying their opponents 7-0.

All in all, the Germans will be happy with their performance thus far in the tournament. Their offense has been on fire as of late, keeping pressure on their opponents while gaining a huge advantage in time of possession. They have also been able to pitch three shutouts in five matches, to the credit of goalkeeper Oliver Baumann.

Hungary

Hungary will be disappointed with a couple of their results, especially against the weaker teams in their group. After starting off with a 5-0 loss to Germany, they had the chance to bounce back against Bosnia and Herzegovina but failed to take advantage, ending in a scoreless draw.

They then had a spirited match against Netherlands which ended in a 1-1 draw. They followed it up with a 2-0 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina which put them in a must-win matchup against the Netherlands on Saturday. Unfortunately, it was a poor showing from Hungary, as they were outplayed thoroughly by their opponents to lose 4-0 and end their hopes of advancing.

Germany Vs Hungary Predictions

The Germans have held over Hungary in the past and this isn’t expected to change in theri matchup on Tuesday. Even if Germany decides to switch a number of starters out of their rotation, they should be huge favourites to win.

It should be noted that Captain Joshua Kimmich picked up a small injury against Bosnia-Herzegovina which could result in him being rested. Benjamin Henrichs will most likely step in at right-back.

Our prediction is a dominant win by Germany which will likely come as a clean sheet against one of the weaker offenses in the group.
