Manchester United’s search for a new striker has taken a surprising turn. The club is now considering Nigerian forward Tolu Arokodare as a backup solution instead of the much-coveted Victor Osimhen. With Osimhen’s price tag soaring and competition from Europe’s elite intensifying, United’s recruitment team is looking to Genk’s prolific marksman. He could be a potential game-changer for the Red Devils’ attack.
Victor Osimhen’s name has dominated transfer headlines for months. After a sensational loan spell at Galatasaray, where he netted 37 goals in 41 appearances, Osimhen has become one of the most sought-after strikers in world football. Chelsea are leading the race for his signature, reportedly ready to meet Napoli’s €75 million release clause. Also, Paris Saint-Germain and clubs from the Saudi Pro League are circling as well. With such fierce competition and a hefty price tag, Manchester United’s pursuit of Osimhen has become increasingly challenging.
Arokodare is a Star in the Making
Enter Tolu Arokodare, the 24-year-old Nigerian striker who has taken the Belgian Pro League by storm. Arokodare finished the 2024/25 season as the league’s top scorer. He bagged 17 goals in 30 league matches. He added six more in other competitions, for a total of 23 goals and 7 assists. His all-around play has also improved markedly. Genk manager Thorsten Fink praised his transformation into a “complete striker.” Fast, strong in the air, and adept with both feet.
Arokodare’s stats this season are impressive. He has averaged 4.4 shots per game, scored every 143 minutes, and contributed six assists in just 21 appearances at one stage of the campaign. His aerial prowess is notable, winning 62% of his duels, and he has created six big chances for teammates. In just two seasons in Belgium, Arokodare has netted 25 league goals. He has already surpassed the legendary Stephen Keshi’s tally in the country and is attracting interest from all over the Premier League.
Why Arokodare Makes Sense for United
With United’s need for a reliable goalscorer more urgent than ever, Arokodare presents an appealing, cost-effective alternative. Acquired by Genk for just £3.5 million in January 2023, the Nigerian forward’s value has skyrocketed. But he remains a far more affordable option compared to Osimhen or other high-profile targets. His adaptability, physicality, and recent Super Eagles debut add to his credentials as a potential EPL success.
Manchester United’s scouting department, led by Christopher Vivell and Jason Wilcox, has been closely monitoring Arokodare’s progress and appreciates his prolific output. While a deal is not yet imminent, the Red Devils’ shift in focus signals a pragmatic approach to squad building. Another Super Eagles striker could soon light up Old Trafford at a fraction of the cost of Osimhen.
