When will the World Cup start?

The tournament is set to kick off on June 11, 2026, with Mexico playing the opening match at the historic Estadio Azteca. The final will be held on July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Who Are The World Cup Qualifiers In Africa?

The 2026 expansion has granted Africa a record 10 slots. After a grueling qualification process that concluded in early 2026, the following nations have booked their place:

  • Morocco
  • Senegal
  • Egypt
  • Cote d’Ivoire
  • South Africa
  • Algeria
  • Ghana
  • Tunisia
  • Cape Verde
  • DR Congo (The final team to qualify via the intercontinental play-offs)

Note: Despite a spirited 4-0 win over Benin in their final group match, Nigeria unfortunately finished second in Group C behind South Africa and failed to secure a spot through the final play-off round.

How Do Teams Qualify For The World Cup?

With 48 teams now participating, FIFA determines the allocation for each of the six confederations:

  • AFC (Asia): 8 direct slots
  • CAF (Africa): 9 direct slots + 1 play-off slot
  • CONCACAF (North/Central America): 6 slots (including hosts)
  • CONMEBOL (South America): 6 direct slots
  • OFC (Oceania): 1 direct slot
  • UEFA (Europe): 16 direct slots

For the African qualification, 54 teams were divided into nine groups. The winner of each group qualified directly, while the best runners-up entered a play-off tournament to determine the final intercontinental representative.
