Week 2 of Italy’s top league, Serie A, was filled with yet another action-packed weekend of football fixtures.
Last year’s winners Inter Milan were able to bounce back from their 2-2 draw at Genoa last weekend with a 2-0 win against Lecce in their home opener. AC Milan on the other hand, continued their slow start to the season with a 2-1 loss to Parma which surprisingly has them in 14th place. Arguably the biggest surprise of the season so far has been Torino, who are in second place with a win and a draw through two weeks.
Let’s take a closer look at the results from Matchday 2.
Inter Defeat Lecce 2-0 In Home Opener
Defending champions Inter Milan beat Lecce 2-0 at home in Serie A on Saturday through goals from Matteo Darmian and Hakan Calhanoglu. It was the squad’s first win of the season after only managing to draw against Genoa on the road in Week 1. The win puts Inter at the top of table for now with 2 matches left to be played on Monday.
Inter didn’t have to wait long to get on the board, as Darmian headed one into the net within the first five minutes of the match. Calhanoglu doubled the advantage via a penalty spot in the 69th minute which was awarded for Kialonda Gaspar’s foul on Marcus Thuram in the box. Calhanoglu is now 17 for 17 in penalties taken in Serie A fixtures.
It should be noted that Inter did not have their captain Lautaro Martinez playing, who was sidelined with a muscle problem.
Lecce have started off with another disappointing two losses this season, after falling to Atalanta 4-0 in their opener. They will attempt to get back on track in Week 3 when they face off against Cagliari on August 31st.
Atalanta Fall To Torino 2-1
Che Adams scored his first goal for his new team Torino as they earned their first victory of the season against Atalanta on Sunday. It was Adams’ first start for Torino after making his debut from the bench last week in a 2-2 draw against AC Milan. His goal in the 49th minute ended up being the decider, putting his team in second place in the Serie A table.
It was Atlanta that took the lead midway through the first half when Mateo Retegui headed into the top corner from Davide Zappacosta’s cross. It only took 5 minutes for Torino to level though when Ivan Ilic beat Carnesecchi with a beautiful finish.
Adams scored early in the second half when Duvan Zapata’s shot was saved by goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi but the Scotland striker was able to put the rebound home.
Atalanta had a shot at equalizing the match in stoppage time but Mario Pasalic missed the penalty attempt following Valentino Lazaro foul on Federico Cassa.
Other Results & Highlights From Week 2
Napoli got their first win under manager Antonio Conte against Bologna later on Sunday by the score of 3-0. Giovanni di Lorenzo opened the scoring, while Kvaratskhelia and Giovanni Simeone sealed the victory in the second half.
AC Milan had a stunning 2-1 loss against newly promoted Parma earlier on Saturday, while a 10-man Udinese team beat Lazio 2-1. Genoa earned a 1-0 win at Monza to move up the leaderboard to third place.
Fiorentina and Venezia ended their encounter in a scoreless draw, keeping both teams in the middle of the table.
There are two matches left to be played today between Caliagri and Como as well as Verona and Junventus. With Juventus and Verona coming off wins in their openers, there would be a new leader heading into Week 3 if either team can pull off another victory.
