Serie A 2024/25: Matchday 8 Results & Highlights

Last Updated on

Matchday 8 of the Serie A 2024/25 season was a good one for the top of the table, as the top 5 teams all came away with wins.

Napoli continues to sit on top of the standings, registering their 6th win in a close match against Empoli to go to 19 points. Meanwhile Inter Milan overcame AS Roma on Sunday night to stay just two points behind the leaders. Juventus currently holds the 3rd spot with 14 points courtesy of a 1-0 home win against Lazio on Saturday.

Mateo Retegui of Atalanta drilled his 8th goal of the season to lead the league in scoring, overtaking Marcus Tharum of Inter with 7.

Let’s go through some of the biggest highlights from the week, including a scoreboard for all matches played in Matchday 8.

Kvaratskhelia Penalty Gives Napoli 1-0 Victory At Empoli

Despite a sluggish performance, Napoli came out of Empoli with a 1-0 to stay in the top position in the Serie A standings this season.

The game-winner came from the boot of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia who put away a spot-kick in the 63rd minute for the only score of the match. The penalty came as a result of a late challenge by Faustino Anjorin on Matteo Politano in the box, giving Napoli a lifeline when they needed it the most. It was Napoli’s only shot on target over the entire 90 minutes and the first goal that Empoli had conceded at home in Serie A this season.

Empoli had the much better chances to break the 0-0 deadlock but were left with regret after a number of miscues. Goalkeeper Elia Caprile was also in top form, pulling off three clutch saves on Sebastiano Esposito in the opening half.

Napoli would likely want to put this performance behind them and look towards their next match against Lecce coming up on Saturday, Oct 25.

Lautaro Martinez Nets Winner As Inter Beat Roma

Lautaro Martinez was the hero for Inter Milan, as they edged out Roma 1-0 at Stadio Olimpico on Sunday night. The Inter skipper struck the only goal of the match in the 60th minute, allowing his side to stay just two points behind Napoli in second place.

The win didn’t come without setbacks however, with both Hakan Calhanoglu and Francesco Acerbi taken off early on due to injuries.

The visitors came close to scoring in the 14th minute but a Henrikh Mkhitaryan shot could only hit the crossbar. They then squandered another great chance after the break when Zeki Celik failed to put away Davide Frattesi’s cross.

With the inability to put the ball in the back of the net,  Roma’s run of scoring in 24 successive home Serie A came to an end.

Next up for Roma will be Fiorentina this coming Sunday night while Inter will take on Juventus a few hours earlier.

Juventus Beat 10-Man Lazio Thanks To Own-Goal

Juventus narrowly beat a 10-man Lazio squad on Saturday thanks to a late own goal by defender Mario Gilla.

Earlier in the match, Alessio Romagnoli was given a red card for a foul on Juventus’ Pierre Kalulu which put his team a man-down. Romagnoli made a sliding tackle which denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.

Juventus could only capitalize being a man ahead in the 85th minute when Mario Gila gifted the hosts three points. Juan Cabal crossed the ball into the box and Gila scored a clumsy own goal which ended up as the only score in the game.

Juventus now have 4 wins and 4 draws in their 8 matches this season to remain undefeated. Their match next week against Inter should be a good test to see where they stand in against some of the better teams in the league.
