Matchday 7 in the 2024/25 Serie A season saw Napoli continue their winning ways with their fifth victory of the season, beating Como 3-1. They are two points ahead of second place Inter Milan, who were also able to notch a close win over Torino to stay pace at the top of the leaderboard. AC Milan lost to Fiorentina on Sunday, dropping them down the standings to 6th place with 11 points.
Inter Milan With Narrow 3-2 Win Over Torino
Last year’s Champions, Inter Milan, were able to hold off Torino in a close match to secure a win and second place in the Serie A standings on Saturday at home.
It was an early red card on visiting defender Guillermo Maripan that gave Inter a huge advantage as they played a man up for a majority of the match. Marcus Thuram came up huge, scoring a hat-trick which included a game-winner in the second-half.
The first breakthrough came in the 25th minute when Thuram headed in a ball from close range just five minutes after Maripan was sent off. Thuram then doubled their lead 10 minutes later with another header to put Inter comfortably ahead.
Torino pulled one back just a minute later, via Duvan Zapata who took advantage of a defensive error to finish from inside the box.
Thuram got his hat-trick in the second half, when he was in the right place following a rebound from Torino Goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.
Torino weren’t finished yet though, as Nikola Vlasic converted a penalty four minutes from regulation after Hakan Calhanoglu tripped Adam Masina in the box.
The visitors pushed hard for an equalizer but being a man-down ended up being too big of a disadvantage as Torino fell 3-2 to Inter.
Both teams will be back in action on Matchday 8 of the season in two weeks time, with Inter taking on Roma and Torino hosting Cagliari.
Milan Drop To Sixth After 2-1 Loss To Fiorentina
Heroics from Fiorentina goalkeeper David de Gea, saving two penalty kicks, gave his team a 2-1 victory over AC Milan on Sunday evening. The win pushes Fiorentina up the leaderboard to the 11th spot while Milan drop to 6th after being tied for second at the end of last week.
Fiorentian opened the scoring in the 35th-minute as Adli found the back of the net when he got a low shot from the edge of the box past Milan keeper Mike Maignan.
Just before the half-time, Milan had a great chance to level out the match with a penalty on Tijjani Reijnders who was tripped by defender Luca Ranieri. De Gea was up to the task however as he denied Hernandez from 12 yards out.
Milan was finally able to score in the second-half when Pulisic volleyed one home from a Hernandez cross. It was the 26-year-old’s fifth goal of the season.
Fiorentina restored their lead though just 17 minutes later when Gudmundsson unleashed a powerful shot from just inside the penalty area. Despite a couple more close calls, Fiorentina was able to hold on and come away with a huge 2-1 win against big favourites Milan.
