Serie A 2024/25: Matchday 17 Scores & Highlights

Last Updated on

Matchday 17 weekend was jam packed full of action, as many of the top teams took to the field looking to jump up the table. In the end, there wasn’t much movement in the top spots as Napoli and Atalanta both came away with victories solidifying their position as the top two.

Napoli had a narrow victory over Genoa which left many unimpressed with the effort. They nonetheless are still in second place with 38 points, just two points behind Atalanta for the top spot. Atalanta got a late game-winner from Charles de Ketelaere which kept them in 1st place, defeating Empoli 3-2.

Fourth placed Lazio held off Lecce thanks to a red card at the end of the first half on Frédéric Guilber, which had them playing a man down for a majority of the match. Meanwhile Bologna beat Torino 2-0 to win their second straight and third in four matches.

Napoli Unconvincing In 2-1 Victory Over Genoa

Despite winning, Napoli manager Antonio Contemade it clear that he wasn’t happy with his team’s performance against Genoa on Saturday.

The team was sloppy but was able to edge out their opponents through goals from Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Amir Rrahmani in the first half. Keeper Alex Meret was also instrumental in the win, making a number of key saves in the second half.

Genoa played some inspired football despite the loss. Pinamonti was the team’s lone scorer, pulling a goal back six minutes into the second half with a top finish into the bottom right corner.

Napoli will look to put the match behind them and focus on their next match against Venezia on December 29. Just a couple points back from Atalanta and loads of matches left to play, they will be hopeful they can once again regain the top spot.

Genoa will match up against Empoli next week in what could be a tough encounter. If the team can play how they did against Napoli however, they stand a very good chance.

Game-Winner By de Ketelaere Keeps Atalanta On Top

Charles de Ketelaere scored two goals, including a late game-winner to secure an important win over Empoli to stay at the top of the Serie A standings. Atalanta have now won 11 Serie A games in a row and are two points above second-placed Napoli.

Atalanta now boast a record of 13 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses in their 17 games, while Empoli took their sixth loss of the season to go with 7 draws and four wins.

Lorenzo Colombo gave 11th-placed Empoli the lead in the 13th minute, volleying in a Scot Liam Henderson cross. Charles de Ketelaere struck back for Atalanta in the 33th via a diving header and then Ademola Lookman gave them the lead just before the hafl-time break.

Mateo Retegui from Atalanta who is currently the top scorer in the league, injured himself in the 21st minute and will be in doubt for the coming matches.

In the second half, Empoli pressed hard and eventually levelled the score at 2-2 through a Sebastiano Esposito penalty. It looked like the match was heading towards a draw until De Ketelaere scored his fifth league goal this season in the 86th minute. The 23-year-old stayed along the edge of the box and then drilled a left-footed shot past the goalkeeper to give his team the win.

Next up for Atalanta will be a tough outing against fourth-placed Lazio on 28 December. Empoli will look to rebound against Genoa.
