Who are the Favourites for the next AFCON?
The primary favourites for the tournament, according to early analysis and betting odds, are:
🥇 Morocco: As the host nation and fresh off their historic semi-final run at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the Atlas Lions are widely considered the top favourites. They have a golden generation of players like Achraf Hakimi, Hakim Ziyech, and Brahim Díaz, along with the advantage of playing on home soil.
🥈 Senegal: The 2021 AFCON champions always field a strong squad with world-class talent, including Sadio Mané, Edouard Mendy, and Kalidou Koulibaly. They are perennial contenders and have the recent experience of winning the trophy.
🥉 Egypt: The record seven-time AFCON champions are led by superstar Mohamed Salah and are always a formidable tactical side. Their history and the individual brilliance of their key players make them a serious threat.
Nigeria: The Super Eagles boast one of the most potent attacks in the tournament, spearheaded by star striker Victor Osimhen. They reached the final in the last edition (AFCON 2023, played in early 2024) and are always a powerhouse.
Algeria: The 2019 champions, with experienced players like Riyad Mahrez, are motivated to bounce back from recent tournament disappointments and possess the talent to go all the way.
Ivory Coast: The reigning champions from the last edition (AFCON 2023) will be looking to defend their title, with a strong mix of seasoned and emerging players.
AFCON 2025/2026: Our Predictions for the Qualifying Groups
AFCON Group A
Group A of AFCON 2025 consists of Morocco, Mali, Zambia, and Comoros. Host nation Morocco headline the group, while Mali and Zambia are expected to challenge strongly for qualification to the knockout stage. Comoros return for only their second-ever AFCON appearance after qualifying as Group A winners.
AFCON Group B
Group B contains Egypt, South Africa, Angola, and Zimbabwe. Egypt — the most successful AFCON nation — enter as favourites, with South Africa looking strong after a solid qualifying campaign. Angola and Zimbabwe both return after making it through their groups in qualifying.
AFCON Group C
Group C features Nigeria, Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania. Nigeria and Tunisia arrive as leading contenders, while Uganda and Tanzania both return after competitive qualifying runs. Uganda, especially, will hope to make it beyond the group stage for just the second time in history.
AFCON Group D
Group D is made up of Senegal, DR Congo, Benin, and Botswana. Senegal, champions in 2021, are among the tournament favourites. DR Congo also pose a strong threat, while Benin and Botswana round out the group, with Botswana qualifying for only the second time in their history.
AFCON Group E
Group E consists of Algeria, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea, and Sudan. Algeria and Burkina Faso enter as favourites, but Equatorial Guinea have proven to be dangerous competitors after strong recent AFCON campaigns. Sudan return after missing 2023.
AFCON Group F
Group F includes Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Gabon, and Mozambique. Defending champions Ivory Coast headline the group, while Cameroon look to reclaim former glory. Gabon return after missing AFCON 2023, and Mozambique complete the group following a solid qualification performance.
AFCON Predictions for Today
We present below our AFCON predictions for today that will help you place bets on your favourite group or team.
How Did We Choose Our AFCON Predictions?
We considered a series of factors before choosing our AFCON predictions. Find below some of these factors.
Previous Winners
The first factor we considered before making our prediction was the previous winners. Only 15 countries have won the AFCON title in the 33 previous editions. While many of these 15 teams have only won once, a series of them have won multiple times.
Egypt have won the highest number of AFCON trophies, with 7 to their names; Cameroon follow closely with 5, while Ghana have won 4. Nigeria have 3 titles, while Ivory Coast national football team (also called Côte d’Ivoire) have also won 3 times (1992, 2015, 2023). Algeria national football team and DR Congo national football team have each won the title twice. The above-listed countries are AFCON favourites to win the 35th edition in January 2026.
Current Form
We also considered the current forms of teams before adding them to our prediction. For example, Morocco have been in good form for the last year. The Atlas Lions were a semifinalist at the 2022 World Cup, defeating Belgium, Canada, Spain, and Portugal en route to their 4th-placed finish.
They also defeated Brazil in a friendly earlier this year. Morocco will likely go far at the AFCON 2025 if they can continue their current form.
Senegal is another team that have been performing at the highest level in recent years. After claiming 2nd following a 1-0 loss to Algeria in the 2019 AFCON final, they defeated Egypt 4-2 on penalties to win the 2021 AFCON tournament. The Lions of Teranga also got to the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup.
Senegal secured a place in the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations with 4 wins and 2 draws from 6 AFCON qualifiers. Maintaining their current form will help them go far when the tournament begins.
Current Players
The Africa Cup of Nations usually assembles the best legs across the continent. One of the factors we considered is the group of players expected to represent each team.
For Nigeria national football team, the likes of Victor Osimhen (who continues to impress in Serie A and Europe) feature strongly and are tipped to be among AFCON 2025’s top scorers.
For Egypt national football team, Mohamed Salah remains the talisman and a constant threat up front; he will again be the focal point of their attacking game.
For Senegal national football team, key names such as Édouard Mendy (in goal) and Kalidou Koulibaly (defence) will provide the backbone of a team with real ambitions.
For Morocco national football team, hosts of the tournament, players like Achraf Hakimi and Yassine Bounou are highlighted as ones to watch.
Other nations with strong rosters include Cameroon national football team, Algeria national football team, and Ivory Coast national football team, each bringing players with continental and club pedigrees.
Underdogs
Another crucial factor we considered is some of the underdogs that have been performing well in recent AFCON editions. Burkina Faso were 4th in the last edition in 2021. They also secured 3rd in 2017 and were 2nd in 2013.
Equatorial Guinea is another underdog that might cause havoc to the big teams. Despite only participating in three AFCON editions, they finished 4th in 2015 and reached the quarterfinals in 2012 and 2021.
