Although both teams ended their first matches with draws, the mood in their respective camps couldn’t have been more different. While Uruguay experienced a disappointment against Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde pulled off a stunning result against Spain.

Bubista’s squad entered the match against Los Charrúas with high hopes, aiming for another upset. From the very start, they pressed hard and maintained an aggressive pace.

Their determination paid off with a historic World Cup goal. In the 21st minute, Kevin Lenini surprised Fernando Muslera with a well-placed shot from a free kick that nestled by the post.

The side managed by Marcelo Bielsa didn’t take long to respond. Before the break, they had not only equalised but also taken the lead.

In the 44th minute, Maximiliano Araujo capitalised on a failed clearance by Sidny Lopes Cabral, slotting the ball into the net from close range. Just seven minutes later, Araujo turned provider, setting up Agustin Canobbio for Uruguay’s second goal.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, Cape Verde managed to level the score. Fernando Muslera miscalculated when coming out of his area to challenge for Mathias Olivera’s pass. Helio Varela took full advantage of the error, beating the Uruguayan goalkeeper and sending the ball into an unguarded net.

In the 68th minute, Araujo found the back of the net once again amidst a chaotic scramble in the box. However, after a VAR review, the 25-year-old’s goal was disallowed.

La Celeste showed determination by refusing to settle for a draw, continuously launching new offensive plays. Meanwhile, their opponents relied on counterattacks to turn the tide. In the end, the match in Miami concluded with an unexpected draw, leaving both teams with equal opportunities to advance to the knockout stage.
