📜 History of Taiwo Awoniyi
Taiwo Awoniyi was born on 12th August, 1997 in Ilorin, Kwara. This Nigerian footballer turned out to be adept with the ball from a really early age.
Despite his parents’ discouragement, Taiwo Awoniyi enrolled in the Imperial Soccer Academy in 2010. This was a training program in Ogun state for aspiring athletes. It focused on developing first-class football talents. Awoniyi was invited to the academy by veteran Nigerian Footballer Seyi Olofinjana, who spotted him at a tournament in London.
He graduated from the football training program in 2012 and signed on the Nigeria U-15 team. From this team, he got his first real taste of international football. But even before that, he played in the Copa Coca-Cola youth soccer tournament in London.
Thanks to his talent for goal-scoring plays, Taiwo Awoniyi became a popular player. He moved through the Nigerian national teams over the years and was snapped up by European teams after turning 18.
Over the years, he has been compared to the legendary Rashini Yekini who holds the record for the highest goals scorer in Nigeria. But Awoniyi seems to be on track to possibly beat the record!
🇳🇬 Taiwo Awoniyi’s Career in Nigeria
Taiwo Awoniyi has not actually played in many domestic leagues beyond his time at the Imperial Soccer Academy. His career in Nigeria is limited since he didn’t join any local Nigerian football clubs.

He played for the National team in international matches until he graduated. Then he joined European teams.

Taiwo Awoniyi has one of the most celebrated international careers of any current Nigerian footballers. Even though it might be lacking highlights and accolades, it is still filled with potential. His international career started when he was flown to London to take part in the Copa Coca Cola tournament.
At this event, he was elected the Most Valuable Player (MVP). This is where he got started. The Imperial Soccer Academy invited him due to his performance there.
Nigerian National Team
In 2013, he joined the Nigeria U-17 team as a 16-year-old. He participated in the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup, where Nigeria claimed the championship. Throughout the entire world cup, Taiwo Awoniyi scored four goals for Nigeria
His next big international event was the 2015 African U-20 Championships as a member of the Nigeria National U20 team. This is yet another event Nigeria won.
The win ensured Nigeria’s entry into the 2015 FIFA U-20 Football World Cup. Taiwo Awoniyi was also a starter for the Nigerian team in this event. Unfortunately, the Nigerian team did not make it very far into this tournament.
In the same year, Awoniyi was promoted to the Nigerian U23 national team. This would be another successful run for him. Right in his debut match, he scored a brace – two goals – against Zambia. This would cement Nigeria’s place in the 2015 All African Games as a rising star.
Awoniyi’s final event of this packed year would be the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations U-23. Nigeria claimed the trophy here as well.
Following this, Taiwo Awoniyi was selected for Nigeria’s 2016 Summer Olympics squad.
Currently, Taiwo Awoniyi is a member of the Nigerian National Team, planning to represent them at the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
The European Circuit
Meanwhile, in addition to his time in the National Team, the player has spent a huge amount of time on the European circuit.
The competition at this level is intense, but Taiwo Awoniyi was able to handle it well enough. Plus, his own skills improved from playing at that level.
He was first scouted and purchased into Liverpool in August 2015, as soon as he turned 18. Yet, despite signing on with Liverpool, hahas hardly had time to play with them.
Later, Taiwo Awoniyi was loaned to FSV Frankfurt, a Tier 4 German team in the Regional Southwest division, for a year. Once his contract with FSV Frankfurt expired, he was quickly loaned to Nijmegen Eendracht Combinatie, also known as NEC.
In July 2017, when his contract with NEC expired, Awoniyi found himself a new team. He got loaned out to Royal Excel Mouscron, a Belgian first-division team. Next, in July 2018, he signed and confirmed another long-term deal with Liverpool.
After he recovered from the injuries, he was loaned to the Bundesliga team Union Berlin. It seems that the seventh time was the charm, as Union Berlin liked his play very much. In the next season, they offered £6.5 million to purchase him away from Liverpool.
Hence, for the 2021 season and onwards, Taiwo Awoniyi is playing for Union Berlin. He has not spoken about any news or plans yet.
