Peter Rufai

Peter Rufai was a charismatic, acrobatic goalkeeper who became one of the pioneers of Nigerian football abroad. Affectionately known as ‘Dodo Mayana’, he kept goal as the Super Eagles won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and played at two World Cups, building a long European career that inspired generations of Nigerian goalkeepers.

Career: A pioneering European journey

Rufai left Nigeria early in his career and spent nearly 15 years in European football across four countries.

From Lagos to Belgium

Rufai began with Stationery Stores in Lagos before a spell in Benin Republic and a move to Belgium, where he spent several years with Lokeren and Beveren. His performances made him one of the first Nigerian goalkeepers to establish himself in European football.

A move to the Netherlands with Go Ahead Eagles followed, before he headed to the Iberian peninsula for the most high-profile spells of his career.

Portugal and Spain

Rufai played in Portugal with Farense and then in Spain, where he kept goal for Hércules and, most notably, Deportivo La Coruña in La Liga. He finished his career back in Portugal with Gil Vicente in 2000.

After retiring he worked in sports administration and later returned to Nigeria to set up a youth development programme, nurturing young talent until his death in 2025.

International tournaments: A 1994 champion between the sticks

Rufai won 65 caps for Nigeria across 17 years and was the goalkeeper as the Super Eagles won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia. He captained his country in their famous 1994 meeting with England at Wembley.

He played every minute of Nigeria’s matches at the 1994 and 1998 World Cups and had earlier collected runners-up medals at the 1984 and 1988 AFCONs. His example opened doors for later Nigerian goalkeepers such as Vincent Enyeama.
