It’s been a week of non-stop action since the commencement of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris last Friday. From the amazing opening ceremony to the over 200 medals being handed out, there has been no shortage of excitement. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular sports and results so far and get a quick summary of the medals table.
Basketball
The men’s and women’s basketball tournaments got underway last week and each qualified nation has played 2 games thus far.
As expected in the men’s 5X5 draw, USA and Canada have dominated their opponents, winning both their games easily. The other two teams that have also managed to go undefeated are Germany and France. The third and final game of the Group Stage will decide the quarter-finalists, as the top two teams from each group and two highest-ranked third place finishers will go through.
In the women’s bracket, United States and Serbia look like the teams to beat, both winning their two games in style. Hosts France and Spain have also looked in good form, which should make for some great quarter-finals which will take place on the 7th of August.
Football
The first round of the men’s football tournament in Paris is in the books and the 8 quarter-finalists have been named. France finished on top of Group A, going undefeated as they beat the United States, Guinea and New Zealand to finish with 9 points. Team USA won two matches which was enough to make it as the second team out of Group A.
Morocco and Argentina came out of Group B with two wins a piece while Egypt and Spain qualified from Group C. Arguably the biggest surprise of the tournament has been Japan’s run through the groups, winning all three of their games. They were joined by Paraguay in Group D to round out the top 8.
The men’s quarter-finals are scheduled to be played on August 2-3.
Gymnastics
In one of the most memorable competitions in recent years, gymnastics superstar Simone Biles claimed her second Olympic all-around crown at Paris 2024. Biles’ total of 59.131 was enough to claim the Gold while Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade captured silver in the event, scoring 57.932.
Japan’s Shinnosuke Oka won the men’s all-around gymnastics gold medal on Wednesday, as his teammate Daiki Hashimoto finished sixth attempting to defend the title.
Earlier in the week Team USA claimed the women’s team gold while Japan were able to claim the men’s title. Overall, the US have claimed 4 medals in gymnastics and are expected to pile on a bunch more in the individual events.
The men’s and women’s floor vault and pommel horse will take place today and tomorrow and the floor routines later in the week.
