Onana’s injury occurred upon resuming training and will render him unavailable for approximately six to eight weeks. This effectively rules him out of preseason preparations and could potentially delay his availability for the start of the Premier League campaign.
While he remains the top priority in Amorim’s plans, Manchester United is intent on ensuring a dependable backup option is secured during his absence. Although the club is actively considering a goalkeeper signing, its focus at present remains on addressing other key objectives.
The club is scouting for an experienced goalkeeper capable of stepping up during Onana’s recovery period. Media speculation has linked names like Diogo Costa from FC Porto and Emiliano Martínez from Aston Villa, though United is also exploring other potential candidates aligned with its financial constraints and transfer strategy.
At the same time, this scenario presents an opportunity for reserve goalkeepers Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton to prove their capabilities. Both players are hopeful of gaining more playing time during the preseason, which promises to be a critical period for their future prospects at the club.
