Rodri has enjoyed an exceptional period recently. The Spanish national team clinched the World Cup title, and he was recognised as the tournament’s best player. The Manchester City star demonstrated exceptional leadership both on the field and in the locker room.
There had been doubts surrounding him earlier – after recovering from a severe injury, he initially struggled to perform at his peak level. However, this year’s World Cup proved that he remains one of the top midfielders globally.
With this, talk of his potential departure and a possible move to Real Madrid has resurfaced. Although he once topped their list of candidates, the Spanish club has since shifted its focus to other players.
Rodri is reportedly keen to make the move to Santiago Bernabeu this summer. He has been rejecting contract extension proposals from Manchester City, seemingly attempting to push the club into agreeing to a transfer.
The issue, however, lies with Real Madrid’s hesitation, with Florentino Perez being particularly opposed to the deal. As things stand, the chances of the Spaniard joining Los Blancos appear slim.
Perez is sceptical about Rodri’s ability to deliver consistent quality in the long term. This decision was made before the World Cup, and even Rodri’s excellent performances during the tournament have not swayed him to reconsider. It seems likely, therefore, that the star midfielder will remain at Manchester City for now.
