In a bombshell development that has rocked Turkish football, Fenerbahce have reportedly reached an agreement with Napoli for the transfer of Victor Osimhen in a deal worth €75 million. The Nigerian striker, currently enjoying a sensational loan spell with Galatasaray, could make the controversial switch across Istanbul in what would be one of the most dramatic transfers in Turkish football history.
Osimhen has been nothing short of phenomenal during his time with Galatasaray, netting an impressive 33 goals and providing eight assists in 38 appearances this season. The 26-year-old has quickly become a fan favourite, forming a strong emotional bond with supporters while cementing his reputation as one of the world’s premier strikers.
From Naples Exile to Istanbul Hero
Osimhen’s journey to Turkey began after a breakdown in his relationship with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis. Despite helping Napoli secure their first Serie A title in 33 years during the 2022-23 season, the striker was effectively exiled from the squad after requesting a transfer.
Galatasaray seized the opportunity in September 2024, securing the Nigerian international on a season-long loan deal with no fee, agreeing to cover his €6 million salary. The move came after potential transfers to Premier League side Chelsea fell through, with the London club reportedly unwilling to meet his wage demands.
Controversial Cross-City Switch
The potential move to Fenerbahce has reportedly been championed by Jose Mourinho, who has instructed club management to “roll up its sleeves” to secure the striker’s signature. However, Turkish football pundit Ersin Düzen has cast doubt on the transfer, stating: “If Osimhen will not stay at Galatasaray, it will not be because of money… The only reason would be if a top European team is interested in him”.
A move between the bitter Istanbul rivals would be highly controversial, potentially damaging Osimhen’s relationship with Galatasaray supporters who have embraced him wholeheartedly during his loan spell.
While Fenerbahce’s bid has reportedly been accepted, several Premier League clubs remain interested in securing Osimhen’s services, with Chelsea and Manchester United among the potential suitors. Meanwhile, in Italy, Juventus sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli has publicly denied interest in the Nigerian, stating: “I am not interested in Osimhen. The rumours that you read in the Italian media are only to put pressure on us.”
