Chuba Akpom, once one of England’s most promising young attackers, is eagerly seeking a return to the Premier League after becoming surplus to requirements at Dutch giants Ajax. The 29-year-old could be on the verge of a significant career revival. He has been strongly linked with an ambitious move to Sunderland, which could help him get his career back on track.
Akpom had an outstanding 2022/23 season with Middlesbrough. He scored an incredible 28 goals in 40 league appearances, finishing as the EFL Championship’s top scorer. His move to Ajax in the summer of 2023 appeared to be a step up. However, his time in Amsterdam has not unfolded as planned. Despite netting 23 goals in 66 appearances over two seasons, most of his game time has come off the bench. Making it clear that he is not central to Ajax’s current plans. He spent the second part of the previous season on loan with LOSC Lille. He made 14 appearances with the club where he scored only three goals and added a single assist.
The newly promoted Sunderland have identified Chuba Akpom as a prime target. The Black Cats are expected to make a formal bid before the transfer deadline. With Sunderland’s history and current ambition, a successful deal could not only restore Akpom’s confidence but also provide him with a vital platform to showcase his talents. Given his prolific scoring record in the Championship, many believe he remains capable of excelling at England’s top level. Sunderland’s likely pitch is to offer him a starring role, with the promise of regular minutes and a clear route back to the big stage.
Akpom’s professional journey has seen him play for clubs across England (including Arsenal, Brentford, Coventry City, Nottingham Forest, Hull City, and Brighton), Greece (PAOK), and now the Netherlands (Ajax). His successful spell at Middlesbrough and PAOK cemented his reputation as a forward who can deliver when trusted with responsibility.
Although born in London, Akpom’s Nigerian roots have always been close to his heart. He represented England at youth level, scoring 18 goals in 41 appearances across various age groups. But has never featured for their senior side. In 2019, the forward expressed his intention to switch allegiance and represent Nigeria at the senior level. However, despite making his switch official, Akpom still awaits his maiden call-up and debut for the Super Eagles.
