Kylian Mbappe will miss the return leg of the Champions League playoff match against Benfica. According to L’Equipe, the forward from Real Madrid is still struggling with pain in his left knee, which forced him to abandon Tuesday’s training session. Medical examinations confirmed that the injury remains unresolved.

The Frenchman has been dealing with a collateral ligament issue since a December match against Celta Vigo. An MRI performed on December 31 revealed damage that required at least three weeks of recovery, but the player returned to action after just eleven days.

Reports suggest this decision was influenced by mounting pressure within the club and high expectations under Xabi Alonso’s management. Later, Mbappe’s return to play was reportedly pushed further by Real Madrid’s surprise Copa del Rey exit, which occurred during Alvaro Arbeloa’s time on the bench.

On Tuesday, Real Madrid’s current head coach expressed confidence about his star player’s readiness for the game. – Kylian is prepared for Wednesday, and that’s what matters most. I want to highlight his dedication to the team – the coach stated.

However, French media are painting a different picture. Mbappe has reportedly been playing through pain for several weeks, struggling with acceleration and directional changes.

Now, a mandatory break awaits him, with growing concerns in Madrid that the early return to action may have worsened his condition. The player’s top priority is now regaining full fitness ahead of the World Cup.
