Career: From German academies to Serie A
Born in Düsseldorf to a Nigerian father and German mother, Okoye came through German youth football before finding his feet in the Netherlands and then Italy.
Breakthrough in the Netherlands
After progressing through the academies of Fortuna Düsseldorf, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen, Okoye began his senior career with Fortuna Düsseldorf II. In 2020 he joined Sparta Rotterdam, where regular Eredivisie football made his name.
He was voted Sparta’s player of the season in 2020-21, establishing himself as one of the Eredivisie’s most promising young keepers and earning a Premier League move to Watford, who immediately loaned him back to Rotterdam.
Establishing himself at Udinese
In August 2023, Okoye joined Serie A side Udinese, stepping up to one of Europe’s top five leagues. He has since featured regularly in Italy, testing himself against elite forwards week in, week out.
His time in Italy has not been without setbacks: in 2025 he served a two-month suspension following a disciplinary case linked to a 2024 fixture. He returned to action and remains Udinese’s Nigerian international keeper, contracted to the club until 2028.

Super Eagles: Competing to be Nigeria’s number one
Okoye debuted for Nigeria in 2019 and became the Super Eagles’ first-choice goalkeeper at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, keeping goal as Nigeria won all three group games before a round-of-16 exit.
He has since shared national-team duties with the likes of Stanley Nwabali, remaining part of the wider goalkeeping picture through subsequent World Cup and AFCON qualifying cycles as one of Nigeria’s most experienced options between the posts.
