Luuk de Jong shared his thoughts after the match between FC Twente and PSV regarding Malik Tillman’s benching. The American player was sidelined by coach Peter Bosz because he arrived late to a team meeting.
De Jong gave his candid opinion on Tillman during an interview with ESPN. “I feel like it’s letting the team down a bit.
We demand everything from each other every day to be there for one another. It’s happened to other players before, so you know what the consequences are.”
The striker understood Bosz’s decision to bench the midfielder. “You need to be on time for the team, or there will be consequences.
This time it’s Malik, and next time it could be someone else, but you hope it doesn’t happen. Malik is one of our best players, and we prefer to have him on the field.”
De Jong mentioned that he spoke with the attacking midfielder about the incident.
“Of course, I talk to him and ask what happened. He explains it, and you accept it, but it does have repercussions, including for us. That’s really unfortunate. I think as a team we handled it remarkably well afterward.”
