Luka Modrić ended his chapter with Real Madrid this June. After thirteen years at Santiago Bernabéu and six Champions League victories, the Croatian midfielder moved to Milan.
As reported by Defensa Central, one of the greatest midfielders in the history of Los Blancos expressed his desire to return to the club in his final discussions with Florentino Pérez. However, this return wouldn’t be as a player.
At 39, Modrić envisions a future as a coach post-retirement. The club’s president has reportedly assured him that the doors to the youth academy would always remain open for him.
La Fabrica, Real Madrid’s youth academy, has been a launchpad for the coaching careers of notable figures like Zinedine Zidane and Xabi Alonso. If Modrić decides to hang up his boots, he could begin working with one of the academy’s youth teams. He himself sees coaching as a natural progression in his football journey.
Starting in the academy could serve as ideal training for Modrić, preparing him for bigger challenges down the line, and perhaps even setting him up to become the head coach of the Santiago Bernabéu club. In recent years, Real Madrid has frequently entrusted former players with managerial roles, valuing their deep understanding of the club’s philosophy.
For now, however, Modrić continues his playing career and is preparing for the upcoming season with Milan. Nonetheless, he is already contemplating his future steps, and his post-retirement plans seem to include a potential return to the Spanish capital.
