German roots and a move to England

Born in Berlin to a German mother and Nigerian father, Balogun came through in German football, playing for clubs including Fortuna Düsseldorf, Darmstadt and Mainz 05. His consistency in the Bundesliga earned a move to the Premier League with Brighton in 2018.

After a spell on the south coast and a loan at Wigan Athletic, he headed north of the border to join Rangers, where the next chapter of his career would bring major honours.

Scottish success and a veteran’s career

At Rangers, Balogun was part of the side that won the Scottish Premiership title in 2021 without losing a league game. He had two spells at Ibrox, either side of a season with Queens Park Rangers, before moving to Cyprus with Aris Limassol in 2025.

Now a veteran, Balogun continues to play at a good level while remaining a key experienced figure in the Nigeria squad, including featuring at the 2026 World Cup.

International career: A dependable Super Eagle

Balogun opted to represent Nigeria and has been a reliable defensive option for over a decade. He was part of the Super Eagles side that reached the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals, finishing third in Egypt.

He went on to play at further AFCON tournaments, including the 2023 edition where Nigeria finished runners-up and the 2025 edition where they took third, forming part of William Troost-Ekong‘s central-defensive unit for the national team.
