Joan Laporta revealed that the club genuinely made efforts to bring Lionel Messi back. Barcelona was keen on reuniting with one of its greatest players. However, the process was hindered by La Liga’s regulatory requirements, which meant the club lacked the approval needed to register his contract.

The Barcelona president clarified that there was a strategy designed to get the league’s authorities on board. The first step, however, was reaching an agreement between the club and the player. “It’s true that Messi was motivated to return, but the contract proposed to Jorge Messi was not authorized,” Laporta explained.

Discussions continued, but a final decision was reached after a meeting with Messi’s father. “Jorge visited my home and informed me that Leo wouldn’t return as they had decided on Miami, where he could enjoy more tranquility and face less pressure,” Laporta elaborated.

Laporta also addressed Xavi Hernandez’s situation, noting his disappointment in Xavi’s involvement in the election debates. Despite this, he emphasized that the decision to change coaches was ultimately the right one, as the team showed improved performance with a largely unchanged roster under Hansi Flick.

On Sunday, March 15, FC Barcelona will hold its presidential elections. This has led to considerable media attention surrounding the club, with some individuals revisiting old topics in an attempt to influence Blaugrana fans’ voting decisions during the elections.
