Another matchday is in the books for the La Liga 2024/25 season with Barcelona still standing tall on top of the standings with 27 points, three more than rivals Real Madrid. Both teams came away with wins this week, as Barcelona crushed Sevilla 5-1 and Real Madrid edged out Celta Vigo on the road.
Third placed Atletico Madrid were also successful, beating Leganes 3-1 for a relatively easy win. Villareal would be disappointed with their 1-1 draw against Gatafe on Sunday, dropping them into fourth, one point ahead of Athletic Club and Mallorca.
Robert Lewandowski continues to light the league on fire, scoring 2 goals for Barcelona in their win and his 12th for the season. He’s a whopping 6 goals ahead of second place which is a tie between Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé and Ayoze Pérez from Villareal.
Let’s get a more detailed look at what happened this week, including highlights from the biggest matches.
Barcelona Destroy Sevilla 5-1 To Stay On Top
Robert Lewandowski added another two goals to his total as Barcelona thrashed Sevilla 5-1 to stay three points ahead of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.
Lewandowski now had a total of 14 goals in 12 games across all competitions, which includes 10 in his past six fixtures. He opened the scoring for his team in the 24th minute through a penalty after Raphinha went down at the hands of Peque Fernandez.
Pedri then doubled the lead just 4 minutes later, drilling home a goal from the edge of the box and Lewandowski added his second in the 39th via a great pass from Raphinha.
Barcelona went into halftime with a 3-0 and looked in total control of the match, dominating time of possession and shots on goal.
Substitute Pablo Torre scored twice late on to ice the game, while Idumbo got past the Barcelona defense to score with Sevilla’s only shot on target. The match ended 5-1 but Sevilla had already resigned to their fate early in the first-half.
Next up for Barcelona will be a huge game where they host Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday. They will then go on to face Real Madrid in an epic showdown on Saturday which could determine the top of the leaderboard.
Vinicius Junior Scores Game-Winner For Real Madrid
Real Madrid had a tough outing on Sunday at the Balaidos, just edging out Celta Vigo in a 1-2 victory through a second half goal from Vinicius Junior.
The home side flinched first as an error on their side of the field led to Camavinga stealing the ball and getting it to Kylian Mbappe in the 20th minute. The French striker made no mistakes unloading an explosive shot from outside the box to put his team in front.
Celta Viga thought they had equalized just a minute later but Borja Iglesias was called offside. The half ended without too many more chances with the score on 1-0 in the favor of Real.
Early in the second, Celta Viga were finally able to pull the match back when Oscar Mingueza found Williot Swedberg open in the box. Swedberg was quick to drill the ball in the back of the net with just one touch to level 1-1.
Luka Modric entered the game in the 64th minute and didn’t take long to make an impact. He threaded the ball to Vinicius Junior just a couple minutes later who went around the goalkeeper to score the game-winner.
This was an important win for Real Madrid as they head into a much anticipated El Clasico matchup with Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu next week.
