In principle, Robert Lewandowski remains the sole recognised “number nine” in Barcelona’s squad. However, Hansi Flick has regularly employed Ferran Torres in that role as well.

Currently, the 25-year-old enjoys greater trust and has been starting in more matches than the Polish striker. While Lewandowski has netted four goals, the Spaniard has managed five so far.

Interestingly, the 37-year-old might soon face competition for his spot from yet another player. Roger Torelló suggests that Flick is considering Marcus Rashford as a central forward. The German coach plans to test this option under specific circumstances, relying on Raphinha’s presence on the left wing, Lamine Yamal operating on the right side, and Fermin Lopez positioned behind Rashford to support the forward.

Flick’s experiment is slated to debut during the game against Girona on October 18 or during the clash with Olympiakos on October 21. The lineup will depend on the availability of the mentioned players.

Should Lewandowski worry about his playing time? Much will depend on his own performance and whether Rashford can thrive as a “number nine.” So far, the 27-year-old has scored three goals and provided five assists.
