Paulo Fonseca struggles to keep his composure. The Portuguese manager took charge of Milan in the summer of 2024 but was dismissed by December.
His subsequent tenure at Olympique Lyon has also been mired in controversy. A recent incident in Ligue 1 might see him sidelined from football for an extended period.
During Lyon’s match against Brest, Fonseca was first sent off to the stands for protesting, then engaged in a heated clash with referee Benoît Millot. The Lyon coach confronted the official, pressing his forehead against him and shouting, which was deemed exceptionally aggressive behavior.
After the game, Fonseca admitted to DAZN that his reaction was inappropriate. “It was a mistake, I shouldn’t have reacted that way,” the coach confessed. However, according to “RMC Sport,” his punishment could be particularly severe. French authorities are considering suspending Fonseca for up to seven months, meaning he could miss the remainder of the season and the start of the next.
Fonseca’s fiery temperament is not a new issue. During his brief stint with Milan, he had several confrontations with Serie A referees, and his time at Lyon shows that this problem persists.
The French football federation is expected to make a decision regarding the penalty for the Portuguese player in the coming days. If he does receive a seven-month suspension, his future with Lyon could be in serious jeopardy.
