The summer transfer window has ignited a fierce battle between two Premier League clubs. Everton and West Ham United both vie for the signature of Nigerian midfield sensation Raphael Onyedika from Club Brugge. The 23-year-old has emerged as one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe. His performances in Belgium drew attention from top clubs across the continent.

Onyedika’s name has been linked with several clubs. But it is Everton and West Ham who are currently leading the race. Club Brugge have set a price tag of around €30 million (£25 million) for the Nigerian international, reflecting his rising stock in European football.

While AC Milan also expressed interest, the Premier League proved to be more determined to bring him. Recent reports suggest that West Ham might be slightly ahead in negotiations. But Everton remain firmly in the mix as both clubs look to bolster their midfield options ahead of the new season.

Onyedika’s Profile and Career Stats

Raphael Onyedika began his European journey with Danish side FC Midtjylland before making a €9.5 million switch to Club Brugge in 2022. Since then, he has established himself as a key figure in Brugge’s midfield, making over 100 appearances for the club. Last season, Onyedika featured in 34 league matches, contributing 2 goals and 2 assists while playing 3,811 minutes across all competitions. His defensive prowess is notable, averaging nearly 2 tackles and 0.8 interceptions per 90 minutes. His efforts helped his team secure 13 clean sheets in the league.

Onyedika’s versatility allows him to operate as a lone pivot or in a double midfield pairing. He is also known for his ability to break up play, transition quickly from defence to attack, and contribute with the occasional goal. Standing at 184 cm, his physicality and tactical awareness have made him a regular starter for both club and country, earning nine caps for Nigeria since his debut in 2022.

Premier League Prospects

A move to the Premier League would represent a significant step up for Onyedika. But his attributes suggest he could thrive in England’s top flight. Both Everton and West Ham are in need of midfield reinforcements. Everton, after losing Abdoulaye Doucouré, and West Ham seeking to add steel and dynamism to their engine room. Onyedika’s robust style, stamina, and ball-winning ability make him an ideal fit for the physical demands of Premier League football.

With two years left on his contract, Club Brugge are in a strong negotiating position. Still, the lure of the Premier League and the opportunity to test himself at the highest level could see Onyedika make a high-profile move this summer.
