History of Women’s Africa Cup of Nations
The inaugural edition of the African women’s tournament was held in 1991 on a home-and-away basis. Multiple countries withdrew from the competition as they were not ready for the development. The governing body of African football, CAF, decided to rechristen the tournament to a biennial event.
