Liverpool are still on top of the leaderboard with 21 points, thanks to a 2-1 win against Chelsea in Matchday 8 of the 2024/25 EPL season. Man City are just a point behind after escaping the Wolves with a victory while Arsenal dropped another match against Bournemouth to drop 4 points behind.
In the middle of the table, Bournemouth and Man United were able to secure big wins to get on 11 points. Fulham and Newcastel on the other hand, suffered losses which pushed them into 8th and 9th respectively.
Ipswich Town, Crystal Palace, Southampton and the Wolves continued to struggle at the bottom of the rankings, falling further behind. With the bottom three teams getting relegated, these four teams seem to be battling for the three slots.
Red Card Costs Arsenal In 2-0 Loss To Bournemouth
Yet another first-half red card for Arsenal ended with a 2-0 loss to Brounemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday. William Saliba was the culprit this time, fouling Evanilson in the 20th minute after a poor pass from Leandro Trossard.
Referee Robert Jones first gave out a yellow but changed his decision to a red following a VAR check. It was the third time this season Arsenal had been reduced to 10 men.
Arsenal was able to get out of the first-half without allowing a goal but Bournemouth eventually got the breakthrough in the 70th minute. A clever corner allowed substitute Ryan Christie to drill in a goal and put the home team ahead.
Arsenal substitute Gabriel Martinelli had a great chance to put Arsenal ahead just a few moments earlier but couldn’t convert from a goalkeeper mistake. The evening got worse for Arsenal quickly, as Justin Kluivert, another Bournemouth substitute, nailed a penalty after David Raya took down Evanilson in the box.
With the defeat, Arsenal are stuck on 17 points behind both Man City and Liverpool. They will however have a great opportunity to make a jump up the leaderboard next week when they face Liverpool on Sunday. Unfortunately they will likely be without a number of their star players, including Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli and Oleksandr Zinchenko. All four players have been listed as doubtful for Matchday 9.
Man City Beats Wolves 2-1 With Last-Gasp Goal
Manchester City defender John Stones was the hero in the team’s 2-1 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday. The win put them at the top of the Premier League for the time being and set a club record of 31 league games unbeaten.
The defending champions were dominant in time of possession from start to finish but weren’t the first to score on Sunday. A seventh minute goal from Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen put them in front after a perfect cross from Nelson Semedo.
Semedo had the opportunity to double the lead but Ederson was able to make a clutch save. Directly after, City defender Josko Gvardiol got the ball into space and curled one past Jose Sa for the equalizer in the 33rd minute.
Despite Man City having a number of chances in the second-half they couldn’t take the lead. It wasn’t until Stone’s header in stoppage-time that the deadlock was broken and City were able to take home the full 3 points. The goal went to a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check and ended up being allowed to give the away team a much needed win.
Man City are still one point behind Liverpool but will be happy to escape the Wolves unscathed. They will play Southampton next week at Etihad Stadium on Saturday with a chance to reclaim the top spot.
