Matchday 7 of the 2024/25 English Premier League completed on Sunday, bringing another exciting week to a close. Liverpool continues to sit at the top of the standings with 18 points after defeating Crystal Palace 1-0 at Selhurst Park. Man City and Arsenal were also able to secure victories against Fulham and Southampton respectively to stay just one point back.
Week 7 wasn’t without upsets though, as Tottenham fell to Brighton on Sunday night at Falmer Stadium, pushing them down the table to 9th. Chelsea also had a surprising 1-1 with Nottingham Forest which put them now 4 points behind leader Liverpool.
Man City Eke Past Fulham With 3-2 Win
Mateo Kovacic scored twice for Manchester City as they overcame a determined Fulham to secure a win after two consecutive draws. The win puts City on 17 points, which keeps them within striking distance of Liverpool in first place.
Despite Man City dominating the early parts of the matchup, it was Fulham who made the first breakthrough. The goal came when Raul Jimenez’s brilliant backheel cross gave Andreas Pereira the opportunity to chip the ball into the net from close range.
Adama Traore had a couple chances to put Fulham up by two but was denied by Ederson in a one-on-one and then shot wide from inside the box.
It wasn’t long before Man City were able to answer when Kovacic got one past the Fulham goalkeeper in the 32nd minute. He then scored another, shortly into the second half, with a clean strike from the edge of the area to put City up 2-1.
It seemed that Jeremy Doku’s strike in the 82nd minute would seal the win for City but Fulham still had some fight left in them. Substitute Rodrigo Muniz spring free in the box to pull a goal back and give his team some hope in the waning minutes. Unfortunately Fulham couldn’t quite get another behind the City defense and ended up falling a goal short to lose 3-2.
City are now unbeaten in 50 home games in all competitions. They are just the fourth English top-flight team to ever manage this feat.
Nottingham Forest Draws With Chelsea 1-1 In Tactical Battle
Chelsea’s five game-winning streak ended on Sunday when they failed to get past Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge, as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Forest were able to pull ahead early in the second half when 32-year-old striker Chris Wood was able to slide one past Robert Sanchez in the 49th minute. Chelseas didn’t take long to respond however as they equalized eight minutes later when Noni Madueke drilled one off his left foot.
Referee Chris Kavanagh gave out a red card to Forest’s Ward-Prowse late in the game for deliberately impeding a Nicolas Jackson counter-attack. He had earlier earned a yellow for a foul on Cole Palmer.
Despite being one man down for the remainder of the match, Forest were able to pull through and end with a 1-1 tie.
Chelsea will now move on to face Liverpool on October 20th in what could be their chance to make a big move up the table.
Brighton Comeback To Beat Tottenham 3-2
Brighton staged a great comeback from two goals down and beat Tottenham in a thriller, 3-2.
Tottenham looked like they were running away with the match in the first half, creating a 2-0 deficit after 37 minutes. Brennan Johnson opened the scoring in the 23rd and James Maddison doubled their lead with a low strike 14 minutes later.
After the halftime break it was all Brighton. Yankuba Minteh capitalized on a mistake from Destiny Udogie to score his first goal for Brighton after moving from Newcastle. Rutter then leveled the game via a pass from Mitoma, which he was able to finish in the left corner.
The winner came from Danny Welbeck who converted with a header in the 66th minute to complete the improbable come from behind victory.
