US Open 2023 Preview: Djokovic Chases 24th Major

Last Updated on

Djokovic US Open

The 143rd edition of the US Open will begin on Monday the 28th of August at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City. The tournament is the fourth and final grand slam of the year. The competition will conclude on September 10th with the Men’s Singles Finals.

Novak Djokovic is chasing a record 24th major and has won the US Open three times before in 2011, 2015 and 2018. This year will be his first appearance at the tournament since 2020 due to injuries.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz will be looking to retain his title which has proven to be a tough task in recent years. No men’s player has been able to win consecutive titles in New York since Roger Federer all the way back in 2008.

On the women’s side of the draw, world number one Iga Swiatek seems to be a clear favourite to win a second consecutive US Open title this year. The 22-year-old has already won 4 grand slams in her short career, including the French Open earlier this year.

US Open Predictions

Carlos Alcaraz enters the tournament with the #1 seed and Novak Djokovic follows with the #2 spot. This means that the two will potentially meet in the Finals if they can make it through the rest of the field. The last time they met in a Grand Slam Final was Wimbledon this year where Alcaraz won a close match in 5 sets.

Alcatraz has a 53-6 record on the season with six titles in 2023. Although he is only 20 years old, the prodigy has the potential to upset Djokovic and take his second Grand Slam of the year. Djokovic will definitely have experience on his side as he chases history. If the two do meet in the Finals, expect another highly skilled match with both players trading sets.

Other players to look for in the Men’s draw are 2021 US Open winner Daniil Medvedev, Danish star Holger Rune and the Toronto Open winner from two weeks ago Jannik Sinner. Another women’s star to watch is the American Coco Gauff who at 19 has already become a top player.

In the Women’s draw, Swaitek is a clear favourite but should face some good competition from No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka. Sabalenka has the best record on hardcourts this year and has already won the Australian Open earlier in 2023.
