The 2024/25 UEFA Champions League season got underway on Tuesday with six matchups, featuring some of the best teams in Europe.
Bayern Munich got off to a hot start, destroying their Croatian opponents Dinamo Zagreb, 9-2 to begin their campaign. Mbappe Scores In 3-1 Real Madrid Win Over Stuttgart
Kylian Mbappe scored for Real Madrid in his first Champions League match with the club, helping his team to a 3-1 victory. The French striker found the open net after a cross by Rodrygo early in the second half to break the deadlock and put his team on top.
Former Brighton forward Deniz Undav was able to equalize in the 68th minute with a header which gave Real Madrid a scare. Antonio Rüdiger however put the defending champions back in front in the 83rd and substitute Endrick sealed the win in penalty time.
The goal by Endrick broke the record for Real Madrid’s youngest Champions League goalscorer. At 18 years and 58 days, the Brazilian was able to break the record set by club Raul in 1995, who scored against Ferencvaros at the age of 18 years and 113 days.
Next up for Real Madrid will be a matchup with Lille, while Stuttgart host Sparta Prague.
Harry Kane Scores 4 Goals In Bayern 9-2 Rout
Harry Kane scored four goals for Bayern Munich in the team’s opener to become England’s top scorer in Champions League history. France winger Michael Olise, also scored twice on his Champions League debut, as Bayern ran away with the match to win 9-2. Bayern Munich were the first team ever to score nine goals in a Champions League game.
Kane gave Bayern the lead with a penalty after Aleksandar Pavlovic was fouled in the box. Raphael Guerreiro scored next through a beautiful half-volley and then Olise who headed in Joshua Kimmich’s cross. At 3-0 going into the half, Bayern were in clear control of the match.
Bayern replaced an injured Manuel Neuer with Sven Ulrich at half-time who ended up conceding twice in five minutes. First to Bruno Petkovic and then to Takuya Ogiwarato cut the match back to within one goal, 3-2.
From there Bayern were dominant, as Kane scored from a rebound after Kimmich’s shot was saved and then Olise struck into an empty net minutes later.
Kane scored his second penalty after a handball decision and soon after his third, when Alphonso Davies was fouled. Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka tacked on the 8th and 9th goals for Bayern as they tied for the second highest scoring Champions League game ever. The record remains 12 goals with Borussia Dortmund’s 8-4 win over Legia Warsaw in 2016.
Liverpool Win 3-1 Against Milan
Liverpool won decisively against AC Milan in their Champions League return to bounce back from Saturday’s shocking defeat by Nottingham Forest.
It was AC Milan who got off to the hot start however when winger Christian Pulisic found the back of the net just three minutes in.
Defender Ibrahima Konate leveled the score with a 23rd-minute header from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s free-kick.Virgil van Dijk then helped his team take the lead before half-time when he headed in Konstantinos Tsimikas’ corner.
Liverpool added a third goal in the 67th minute when Cody Gakpo had a brilliant run which ended with a Dominik Szoboszlai tap-in.
