Bayer Leverkusen took the decisive step earlier this week by parting ways with Erik ten Hag. The German club is now actively searching for his successor, and according to BILD, several potential candidates are being considered for Die Werkself. In the meantime, Rogier Meijer has stepped in as interim head coach to manage the team.
One of the primary contenders is Marco Rose, widely seen as the most logical choice for the role. The 48-year-old coach was most recently active in Germany with RB Leipzig.
However, other names have also surfaced in the discussions. Edin Terzic (42), Oliver Glasner (51), Matthias Jaissle (37), and Xavi (45) are reportedly on the shortlist, according to Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes.
Rolfes emphasised the need for a careful and deliberate approach in selecting Ten Hag’s replacement. “Following the disappointment with Ten Hag, we cannot rush this process. We want to ensure we make the right decision, both for the present and the long-term future of the team.”
Bayer Leverkusen’s next match is scheduled for Friday, September 12. If no suitable candidate is appointed by then, Meijer is expected to lead the team alongside Ulderink.
The interim duo is currently overseeing training sessions and recently coached the team during a friendly match against Viktoria Köln. Rolfes acknowledged that this temporary solution remains a possibility. “We are considering both internal and external options. For many roles within the club, we deliberately opt for individuals from our own organisation. While this approach isn’t always standard practice for coaching positions, both avenues are open to us in this case.”
