Group A

Teams: Morocco, Mali, Zambia, Comoros

Host Morocco dominate the spotlight and are by far the AFCON favourites in this group. Mali and Zambia arrive with solid qualification campaigns and can both push for a top-two spot. Comoros may be the underdog, but they’ll look to cause an upset and could be dangerous for any slip-ups.

Group B

Teams: Egypt, South Africa, Angola, Zimbabwe.

Egypt, with their record AFCON pedigree, and South Africa are expected to progress from this group. Still, Angola and Zimbabwe both have momentum and can spoil the party if one of the big teams under-performs.

Group C

Teams: Nigeria, Tunisia, Uganda, Tanzania.

Nigeria arrive as one of the clear favourite sides in AFCON 2025, and Tunisia bring experience and consistency. Uganda and Tanzania are dark horses who could spring surprises if they find form at the right time.

Group D

Teams: Senegal, DR Congo, Benin, Botswana.

Senegal, the recent winners, and DR Congo are the front-runners here — both have the talent to go far. Benin and Botswana will aim to upset the balance and pick up key results to push for qualification, but surprises are common in Afcon results.

Group E

Teams: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea, Sudan.

Algeria are clear favourites in this group; Burkina Faso and Equatorial Guinea offer the most serious challenges, while Sudan will aim to take advantage of any surprise drops from the others.

Group F

Teams: Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Gabon, Mozambique.

Defending champions Côte d’Ivoire headline this group and look strong to advance. Cameroon are familiar with winning in Africa and will not go quietly. Gabon and Mozambique will need to hit high form if they want to upset the expectations.

Originally, 52 teams attempted to join the tournament in AFCON groups.

As there was only space for 48 teams, the eight lowest-seed teams were placed in a preliminary round. The top four were allowed into the qualifiers.

Over the course of the qualifiers, half the teams were eliminated. 24 teams moved on to the final tournament of the Africa Cup of Nations.

In the qualifiers group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations, there were 12 groups. The top two teams from each group advanced, with Nigeria being among the top contenders.
