Born in Berlin to a German mother and Nigerian father, Balogun came through in German football, playing for clubs including Fortuna Düsseldorf, Darmstadt and Mainz 05. His consistency in the Bundesliga earned a move to the Premier League with Brighton in 2018.

Balogun opted to represent Nigeria and has been a reliable defensive option for over a decade. He was part of the Super Eagles side that reached the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals, finishing third in Egypt.
