FC Barcelona has expressed frustration with the condition in which Raphinha returned after international duty. The winger played a total of 108 minutes during the break, including the final moments of a match against Bolivia at an altitude of 4,100 meters above sea level. The conditions were particularly challenging, featuring low temperatures, a tough playing surface, and significant physical demands.

The decision to bring Raphinha onto the pitch was made by Carlo Ancelotti, who aimed to preserve his unbeaten streak as Brazil’s head coach. From Barcelona’s perspective, this decision was puzzling, especially since Brazil had already secured qualification for the World Cup. Ultimately, Brazil still suffered a 0-1 defeat.

“When you’re asked to play at 4,000 meters, it becomes a challenge for all teams. And when the referee invents a penalty, it just makes things worse,” Raphinha commented, visibly upset after the match.

Brazilian Football Federation president Samir Xaud also voiced his displeasure with how events unfolded, accusing the organisers of creating “unfair external conditions.” Meanwhile, Ancelotti defended the players’ effort after the game and expressed dissatisfaction with the VAR decision on the controversial penalty.

For Barcelona, the concern isn’t just about the minutes played but also the toll of extensive travel. Raphinha had to cross the Atlantic twice, cope with jet lag, and adapt to stark temperature changes. The club now fears that these factors could negatively impact his performance in the upcoming La Liga and Champions League matches.

Raphinha returned to Catalonia feeling frustrated and exhausted. In Barcelona, there is a prevailing belief that the entire situation could have been avoided if the coach had handled the matter with greater sensitivity.
