At just 22 years old, Atubolu has established himself as Freiburg’s first-choice goalkeeper. Earning praise for his commanding presence and shot-stopping ability. In the 2024/25 Bundesliga season, he has featured in 26 matches, keeping 10 clean sheets and making 80 saves from 113 shots faced, with a save percentage of 70.8%.
His performances also saw him set a club record with a 576-minute clean sheet streak, the fifth-longest in Bundesliga history. Over his career at Freiburg, Atubolu has played more than 90 matches across all competitions. He consistently demonstrates reliability and maturity beyond his years.
Napoli to Strengthen Competition Between the Sticks
Napoli’s interest in Atubolu is no surprise. The club is seeking to reinforce its goalkeeping department and sees Atubolu as a long-term solution. Should he make the switch, he would continue the proud tradition of Nigerian players excelling at Napoli. He could provide some healthy competition for current first-choice goalkeeper Alex Meret as Antonio Conte and his team prepare to take on Champions League football this season.
Despite his Nigerian heritage, Atubolu has yet to make his debut for the Super Eagles. He has represented Germany at youth levels and has expressed a desire to feature in the German senior team. However, with stiff competition for the goalkeeper spot in Germany, the door remains open for Nigeria.
