The transfer window is heating up, and a drawing significant attention in European football is SC Freiburg’s Noah Atubolu. Reports indicate that Serie A champions Napoli are keenly monitoring Atubolu. Discussions are already underway between the Italian giants and the player’s representatives. If the deal materialises, Atubolu could be the next Nigerian star to don the famous blue of Napoli, following in the footsteps of Victor Osimhen.

At just 22 years old, Atubolu has established himself as Freiburg’s first-choice goalkeeper. Earning praise for his commanding presence and shot-stopping ability. In the 2024/25 Bundesliga season, he has featured in 26 matches, keeping 10 clean sheets and making 80 saves from 113 shots faced, with a save percentage of 70.8%.

His performances also saw him set a club record with a 576-minute clean sheet streak, the fifth-longest in Bundesliga history. Over his career at Freiburg, Atubolu has played more than 90 matches across all competitions. He consistently demonstrates reliability and maturity beyond his years.

Napoli to Strengthen Competition Between the Sticks

Napoli’s interest in Atubolu is no surprise. The club is seeking to reinforce its goalkeeping department and sees Atubolu as a long-term solution. Should he make the switch, he would continue the proud tradition of Nigerian players excelling at Napoli. He could provide some healthy competition for current first-choice goalkeeper Alex Meret as Antonio Conte and his team prepare to take on Champions League football this season.

Despite his Nigerian heritage, Atubolu has yet to make his debut for the Super Eagles. He has represented Germany at youth levels and has expressed a desire to feature in the German senior team. However, with stiff competition for the goalkeeper spot in Germany, the door remains open for Nigeria. Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has listed Atubolu as a potential candidate for the national team. Signalling strong interest from the Nigerian Football Federation.

Atubolu’s situation mirrors that of Felix Agu, the Werder Bremen defender who recently switched allegiance from Germany to Nigeria. With 2025 AFCON closing in and the new European football season set to start soon, it is going to be a year of choices for Noah Atubolu immediately after his summer break.
