Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu has officially been given clearance to represent the Super Eagles at the senior international level, the NFF confirmed. The 25-year-old, who previously featured for German youth national squads, will make his debut for the Super Eagles at the upcoming Unity Cup invitational tournament in London. Nigeria plays their first match against Ghana on May 28th.

Agu’s switch in allegiance comes after a period of consideration and discussions with Nigerian football authorities. Born in Germany to Nigerian parents, the versatile full-back had represented Germany at the U-21 level. Making two appearances in friendly matches in 2019. However, FIFA regulations permitted him to opt for Nigeria at the senior level as these don’t count as official matches.

Nigerian football fans met this news with enthusiasm. They see Agu as a valuable addition to the Super Eagles’ defensive options. His experience in the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen should bring solidity and depth to the squad. Agu has been a consistent performer for his club. In the just-concluded 2024/2025 Bundesliga season, he made 22 appearances, impressively scoring three goals and providing one assist from his defensive position.

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle had initially invited Agu to train with the squad for the Unity Cup. With his clearance now secured, he is eligible for selection. Agu’s switch bolsters Nigeria’s defensive options ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. His versatility, combined with his Bundesliga experience, positions him as a potential key player for the Super Eagles. As he prepares for the Unity Cup, facing Ghana, Jamaica, or Trinidad and Tobago, and a friendly against Russia on June 6, 2025, fans eagerly await Agu’s impact on the international stage.
