Arsenal are setting their sights on a significant attacking reinforcement this summer, with Nigerian international Ademola Lookman emerging as a prime target for the Gunners. As Mikel Arteta’s side aims to challenge for the Premier League title and make deeper runs in European competitions, the addition of a dynamic forward is seen as essential-and Lookman’s recent performances in Serie A have put him at the top of Arsenal’s wishlist.

Lookman’s Rise in Serie A

Since joining Atalanta, Ademola Lookman has transformed his career, becoming one of the most effective and consistent attacking wingers in Italy. In the 2023/24 season, Lookman delivered a string of standout performances, notably scoring a hat-trick in the Europa League final-a feat that not only secured Atalanta their first major European trophy but also showcased his ability to deliver on the biggest stage. Over his three seasons with Atalanta, Lookman has contributed 38 goals and 20 assists in Serie A, placing him among the league’s elite attackers.

In the current campaign, he has registered 14 goals and five assists in 29 league appearances, leading Serie A’s WhoScored ratings with an impressive 7.37-higher than stars like Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martínez.

Premier League Experience: A Tale of Two Leagues

Before his Italian renaissance, Lookman spent several seasons in the Premier League with Everton, Fulham, and Leicester City. However, his time in England was marked by inconsistency and a struggle to find his best form.

Across spells at these clubs, he managed 11 goals in 96 appearances- far from the prolific numbers he has posted in Italy. At Everton, for example, he scored just four goals in 48 appearances, while at Fulham and Leicester, he combined for 4 goals in 34 games. This contrast has led many to label him an “EPL flop turned Serie A star”.

Would Lookman Fit at Arsenal?

Arsenal’s attack has at times lacked the cutting edge and unpredictability needed to break down stubborn defences, especially from the left flank. Lookman’s dribbling, pace, and ability to score in high-pressure situations make him an appealing option for Arteta’s system. His experience in multiple positions would offer tactical flexibility, while his proven record in Serie A and Europe suggests he could thrive in Arsenal’s possession-based, high-intensity style.

Moreover, Lookman’s maturity and resilience-demonstrated by his turnaround after a challenging Premier League stint-indicate he is ready for another shot in England. With Arsenal reportedly ready to make a strong offer and Lookman open to a Premier League return, a move seems increasingly likely.
