Ligue 1 has kicked off the 2024/25 season under a cloud of numerous challenges. The departure of Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid has dealt a severe blow, complicating the league’s efforts to promote itself on the international stage. Even with a broadcasting agreement with DAZN, stability remains elusive. Legal disputes and a declining subscriber base have caused significant concern among the clubs. “Ligue 1 has faced issues with television rights for years,” points out French journalist Coralie Salle.

DAZN is also grappling with piracy, which significantly affects the venture’s profitability. In response to the increasing number of illegal streams, the platform has opted to reduce prices and introduce unique promotions. Despite these efforts, the subscriber count of approximately 500,000 still does not ensure profitability.

Another pressing issue for Ligue 1 is the financial health of its clubs. A prime example is Olympique Lyon, which is struggling with massive debt and the risk of relegation. Salle suggests that implementing wage restrictions similar to those seen in La Liga could be a possible solution. “What Javier Tebas is doing in Spain is yielding results; it might be worth considering similar measures in France,” she adds.

Additionally, concerns are growing over fan behavior and the quality of officiating.

The league authorities are taking disciplinary actions against coaches who voice their criticism, such as Paulo Fonseca and Pablo Longoria, but this doesn’t alleviate the tense atmosphere. Additionally, there are incidents involving ultras, sometimes resulting in fires at stadiums.

Alongside the challenges with broadcasts and finances, there are concerns about the league’s competitive level. While Paris Saint-Germain continues to dominate, other teams show inconsistency, reducing the championship’s appeal. French football requires significant reforms to restore its former glory.
