2023 NFL Season Begins: Week 1 Results & Rankings

Last Updated on

nfl opening ceremony

The 2023/24 NFL season began this weekend with 14 games taking place in an action-packed Week 1. While many of the top teams continued their form from last year, others struggled on opening night.

One of the biggest surprises from the first week was the 21-20 loss by the Kansas City Chiefs to the Detroit Lions at home. The defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs were unable to get their explosive offense in rhythm, as Patrick Mahomes had a rare off-day at quarterback. Lions QB Jared Goff remains undefeated against Mahomes in their head-to-head match up.

Bengals Stumble, 49ers Soar in NFL Season Opener

Another team that started off slow in their season opener was the Cincinnati Bengals. After becoming the highest paid NFL player of all-time, QB Joe Burrow had one of his worst games of his career. He completed just 14 of his 32 passes for a total of 82 yards, as the Bengals lost 24-3 to the Cleveland Browns.

The San Francisco 49ers had a huge win against the Pittsburgh Steelers, dominating from start to finish for a 30-7 score line. Brock Purdy looked terrific, leading the offense with 220 yards passing and two touchdowns. The 49ers will be looking to make it further this season after being beaten in the NFC Championship game last season by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Arguably the game of the week so far was between the Miami Dolphins and Los Angeles Chargers. The Dolphins were able to just come out on top, 36-34, with Tua Tagovailoa leading the way with 466 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Star wide receiver Tyreke Hill had a massive game, collecting 215 receiving yards on 11 catches and two touchdowns.

The Chargers won’t be disappointed however with their performance. Their two running backs Austin Ekeler and Joshua Kelley combined for 208 rushing yards and QB Justin Herbert was solid for 228 yards and a touchdown.

The Green Bay Packers started with a 38-20 win against the Chicago Bears led by quarterback Jordan Love making his first start for the team. He was able to put up some big numbers, passing for 245 yards which included 3 touchdowns. Things are looking up for the Packers as they enter a new era without long-time quarterback Aaron Rogers.

Philadelphia Eagles Extend Winning Streak, Dallas Cowboys Dominate in NFL Week 1

After making it to the Super Bowl last year, the Philadelphia Eagles continued their hot streak in the regular season beating the Patriots, 25-20. Despite the loss, New England head coach Bill Belichick’s defense looked impressive against the Eagles high-ranked offense and quarterback Mac Jones looked comfortable leading the offense.

In the biggest margin of defeat of the week, the Dallas Cowboys absolutely dominated the New York Giants 40-0 on Sunday night. The Cowboys defense held the Giants to 171 total yards, forcing two interceptions and 1 fumble. New York’s QB Daniel Jones was sacked 7 times in total, managing just 104 yards passing. Dallas QB Dak Prescott didn’t have to do much on offense with RB Tony Pollard running for two touchdowns and the turnovers by the Giants.

There is one more game to be played on opening week between the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills. It will be veteran quarterback Aaron Rogers’ first game leading the Jets. Expect a close game with the Jets at home and an extremely strong Bills team looking to start the season with a win.
