📜 History of Zaidu Sanusi
Zaidu Sanusi is a 24-year-old Nigerian footballer born in Jega, Kebbi, Nigeria, on June 13, 1997. He started his playing career in Nigeria before moving to Portuguese Primeira Liga side Gil Vicente where he played until 2017. Sanusi later moved to Portuguese third division side Mirandela on loan in 2017 before joining them permanently on a free transfer on August 8, 2018.
He then moved back to a Primeira Liga side after spending another year at Mirandela. Sanusi signed for Santa Clara on a free transfer in July 2019. After one year, performing brilliantly in the domestic league, he caught the attention of FC Porto, signing for them in August 2020 for a €4 million fee. He has been thriving since then, and he recently was part of the Champions League team of the week.
Zaidu Sanusi: Career In Nigeria
Sanusi played for several local clubs in Nigeria, performing at the highest level. However, he was only discovered when he was at Mutunchi FC, a local club in Kaduna, Kaduna State, a Northern State in Nigeria.
At the time, Sanusi caught the eyes of scouts who had come from Europe. The 24-year-old was only 18 at the time, and he was signed to Portuguese Primeira Liga side Gil Vicente in 2016.
Sanusi couldn’t play much when he first signed for Gil Vicente because his career was hampered by injury. He eventually had to go on loan to clubs in lower divisions before getting the opportunities he needed to build himself through regular playing times.
🌐 Zaidu Sanusi: International Career
Thanks to his extraordinary burst into the limelight, Zaidu Sanusi earned his first call-up into the Nigerian National Team in October 2020. He made his debut in the 1-0 defeat to Algeria in a friendly game on October 9, 2020. He played again a few days later, on October 13, 2020, where Nigeria played 1-1 against Tunisia.
Sanusi finally made his official debut a month later in November in the country’s 4-4 draw against Sierra Leone in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. After that, he played the full 90 minutes in Super Eagles’ 1-0 win over Benin Republic on March 27, 2021, and 53 minutes in Nigeria’s 3-0 win over Lesotho a few days later. He last played for Nigeria was in the 2-1 win over Cape Verde on September 7, 2021. The player has missed out a number of times when he wasn’t in the squad or left on the bench. Zaidu Sanusi was on the bench for Nigeria’s last two international games (FIFA World Cup Qualifiers), their 2-0 win over Liberia and 1-1 draw against Cape Verde.
The 24-year-old has made a total of six appearances for the Super Eagles, three of which have come in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers, one in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, and two in the International Friendlies.
