One team stands out from the rest, Brazil. The record holder for the most World Cup victories puts itself forward once more as a more than serious contender for the title. In a group that almost exactly resembles their 2018 group, Brazil seems to be a cut above its future opponents.
Brazil aside, however, the battle could well be vicious between the other three teams. Serbia, Switzerland and Cameroon all have a case to make, and as the group plays out with different matchups each day. They will all be looking to take away some points from their matches with Brazil.
The favourites and the outsiders of Group G of the World Cup
Brazil should logically finish top of this group. Brazil’s players should allow it to cruise through the first phase of this World Cup. With Neymar, Coutinho, Gabriel Jesus and Richarlison, Brazil definitely has the means to score. And what’s more, it can always count on the precious experience of Thiago Silva.
Otherwise, despite all the obstacles, Switzerland seems to be in a somewhat better position that the other two opponents. Pay close attention to the Serbian trio of Tadic, Mitrovic, Vlahovic, who could well make sparks fly, and to Cameroon, who trumped Algeria in the qualification play-offs.
Group G Predictions – Favourites
- Brazil: One of the favourites for the title, who will want to secure this position from the very start of the competition. With world-class players in every position, Brazil should logically dominate its group.
- Switzerland: Quarter-finalists of the Euro, having eliminated France, and been so close to knocking out Spain, the Swiss have accumulated both experience and confidence in the months leading up to the Qatar World Cup.
Group G Predictions – Outsiders
- Serbia: A dark horse, capable of finishing top of its qualifying group against a team like Portugal while playing in League B in the Nations League. With players like Milinkovic-Savic, Tadic and the newcomer Vlahovic, Serbia is well armed.
- Cameroon: They put on a spectacle by knocking out Algeria in the away leg in the very last second of extra time. It would be wise not to write off the Indomitable Lions in Qatar. The African team has nothing to lose and a surprising turn of events is entirely possible here.
